Vintage Newlywed Furniture and Amore

Vintage 1940's newlywed furniture...also called waterfall and swing era furniture.

Let's set the mood with this little number by Ella and Louis dancing

Newlywed furniture was massed produced before and after WWII.
Made quickly with a lot of fancy veneer over pine to make the pieces look more expensive, it was the furniture of choice for the many new brides who wanted to fill their newly acquired homes.

Ads like these ran in newspapers all over the states and it wasn't uncommon for 6-7 pieces of furniture to cost less than $200. That would be about $3000 in today's market.
Love is in the air.

Three coats of paint and white wax in every nook and cranny...this tulip pink bedroom set is sure to last another 70 plus years.
It took many, many hours to add wax to all the spindles on the bed. Here's a pic of me working on it while watching Rickie Fowler lose the Masters.

                                             Before and After Photos
The vanity was in great shape and needed little work. I had to remove the veneer from one side of the vanity and two small strips on the legs. And I patched a few nicks and scratches on the top with wood filler. The mirror is original and there is a storage area in the middle of the piece. This is a gorgeous vanity and is ready for everyday use.
The top of the chest took some major elbow grease to sand off of the old veneer. Someone had the bright idea to use the strongest glue known to man to try and repair it. I spent several days getting the top to look flawless. The veneer was peeling from the sides and had to be removed, but the veneer in the front was in excellent condition. The drawers are deep and slide in and out with ease. This truly is a majestic piece of furniture.
The bed needed very little prep work except for the veneer peeling from the headboard. I chiseled away and sanded it until I got the smooth finish I was looking for.

All furniture was hand painted by me using the materials listed below:
Undercoating is Valspar Chalk paint in Tulip Pink. The second and third coats of paint are Olympic One Tulip Pink in an egg shell finish. I used white wax called The Best Dang Wax from The Dixie Bell Paint Company. Top coats of sealant are Minwax Polyacrylic in Satin.
